Happiness is one of the central topics of concern in positive psychology. Much of our joy comes from simply being nice. Research shows that acts of kindness do make you feel happier and more in control. When we give to others or perform an altruistic act, we activate parts of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust.
“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” – Princess Diana
Lynn Alden, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia suggests that acts of kindness that truly make you feel happy must be selfless; “Be alert of the things you can do for other people and do them spontaneously because you want to do them. It has a side effect of making you feel good.”
With that in mind, we at BFDC, are supporting the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK) on the 17th February (and beyond) and giving a little kindness to those around us. RAK have dedicated this day to remind us to look beyond ourselves and bring us back on our journey towards happiness.
We’re not just celebrating one day in the year – but want you to bring a bit of kindness into every day. What are you waiting for? Help us to increase the number of kind acts in the world.
How can you be kind today?
