Parenting for EQ
Adult
Did you know that your child might have a high intelligence quotient (IQ), but still not achieve his or her full potential? One of the major missing parts in the success equation for many people is emotional intelligence (also known as EQ and EI). For various reasons and thanks to a wide range of abilities, children with high emotional intelligence – even if their classical IQ is just average – tend to be more successful in life than those with lower EQs but higher IQs. Even though EQ or emotional intelligence is well recognized as an important predictor of success, parents are often confused about how to help their children develop EQ abilities such as self-confidence, motivation, social skills, or patience.
Social Skills
Ages 6 to 12
One of the most important skills a child can have is the ability to interact socially with others, and yet this skill is often underemphasized in school. This program is designed to help your child to develop assertiveness, read social cues, react appropriately, and interact socially. The important tools that will someday be needed to work cooperatively with a team, interview for a job, negotiate a business venture or even ask for a date are first learned through social interactions as a child. This class helps kids to develop, practice and hone those skills, and also to learn to deal with bullying and cliques, and to build confidence in social situations.
Literacy Workshop
Ages 6 to 12
In this class, stories will be presented in an interactive way that introduces and exposes children to the organization of a good story. Students will listen to narratives and learn to identify elements of a good story or author. Through repeated and organized exposure to stories and story elements, children will gain strategies for remembering, retelling, and analyzing existing literature as well as the foundational skills to formulate their own oral narratives.
Ages 11 to 18
Including the trademark “Think on Your Feet®” program developed for executive training by the Lam Institute and adapted by the Blurton Child and Family Center for use with adolescents, this Saturday-Sunday overnight workshop helps teens and pre-teens to learn to be effective speakers. During the program, they will learn to organize and structure their ideas to deliver their communications with Clarity, Brevity, and Impact. They will also develop the skills needed for interviews and one to one interactions.
Presenting Weekend
Ages 11 to 18
A natural follow-up of “Think On Your Feet®” is the Skilled Presenter™ which examines the mechanics of how to deliver a presentation. We focus on how others see you. Special emphasis on organizing your presentation; polishing performing skills such as voice, eye contact, gestures, stance, as well as preparing dynamic visuals. Sharpen your child’s life skill of communication to enable greater comfort and confidence in both small group and large group presentations.
