Mindfulness is about being aware of the present moment. Mindful coloring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply color in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. Similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about what we have done, what we need to do etc. and focus on the task.
There is no right or wrong way to color in, it is a form of self-expression.
Research has shown that mindfulness can improve our well-being. One particular study by Carsley, Heath and Fajnerova (2015) looked at the effectiveness of a classroom mindfulness coloring activity for test anxiety in children. Participants, at an average age of 11 years old, demonstrated a decrease in anxiety after engaging in a session of coloring. They felt more relaxed by paying attention to the present moment and were also practicing training their minds to focus which can help in study and work.
