English Language Learners (ELLs) have unique literacy needs. Learning to read, write and communicate effectively in English may be challenging as the rules for expression, both verbal and written, may differ vastly from their mother tongue. It is important to support non-Native English speakers and build their competency in English Language skills to help them feel confident in class, and also improve their overall academic performance.
This program employs two strategies to help ELLs. The Orton-Gillingham method is used to provide a solid foundation for decoding and encoding English words. This is supported by Social Language Development strategies which focus on building new vocabulary, learning social language skills, and exploring new texts in English.
